Hi,

I was surfing the net about Bikram Yoga and I saw you'd made a comment about the place in London and that you were going to write about climbing:

http://www.qype.co.uk/place/296041-Bikram-Yoga-City-London

Wondering if you ever got around to it, that's all/

Thanks,

Hello there James. I've not seen you since I've last seen Mia, which is in AGES. Great to hear from you. To answer your question, I don't think they have a clue - It's a truism that you pay for 'free' web services with your personal information, which is then used for behavioural advertising! I live and breathe this stuff and it's my job, so I'm biased, I'd rather swap my entire music collection for 'gangsta rap' than switch of my FB or Tweets. I wanted to read your hyperlink but it doesn't work! Could you send me the URL?I'm assuming it's a blog post of yours so shall look at your website.

On spam - FB is suffering from what I call an 'information bottleneck' where so many people are sending you so much rubbish that you end up reading none of it and you end up like me and a friend of mind with hundreds of unread messages. Personally I'd pay for a premium FB service if I thought I'd be able to avoid spam, as well as some of the more annoying apps, but it would have to be low. I'd only pay a significant sum if I thought I could monetise my FB experience. But saying that I'm greedy.

I like it when Facebook shows ads that say, Are you 32 and male? And I'm like, wow, it's almost like I voluntarily entered that information into a huge database.

I also saw quite a nice (and honest) thing from Google saying that Chrome doesn't really block ads cos, well, that's where there revenue comes from.

In fact I did consider FB suicide last week, but opted for a half measure and locked down all my profile. It becomes oddly less compelling when no one says anything about your status cos they can't see it. Now if only you could suck the mail out into a separate client.

Meanwhile I've been having similar thoughts.

To what extent, though, do you think that people who aren't involved in marketing realise that they're just updating a really good DM list? And to what extent do you think they feel the benefits of using social media outweigh the downer of the spam it creates?

Funny you should post this up, only a few days ago i starting thinking of the systems being engineered to fund this (purely from geeky technical prospective). You can call it billing, but to enforce will definately be a long cycle before it starts to affect the masses. The biggest kick-starters have been your paypals and moneybookers.com who have "installed" tight security on their websites to avoid rising online fraud. And the way to achieve this was to allow no access (old or new users) unless you allow the system to hit your bank account and verify you. They do this my deducting a figure less than £1 from your bank account and you verify this with the amount withdrawn. Although this petty amount gets refunded back to you, you have already become that customer in demand. The urgency in topping up that skype account to resume an important long distance phone call or interview. Or the last 15min of that online bid on ebay for that bargain digitial camera! Youve got to allow moneybookers.com to verify you (randomly) getting into your bank account- no verification no camera.

Now lets apply this to other internet dependancies we have somehow nurtured....your thoughts on that!?
